Meme: President Trump said: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation.”

Veracity: Accurate

What’s Going On: On May 12, 2026, memes circulated (examples above), suggesting that President Donald Trump had said: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation.”

At 2:06 p.m. Eastern Time, independent journalist Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) shared a brief clip of Trump’s then-recent remarks outside the White House:

Trump: "Americans' financial situation -- I don't think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That's all."

Rupar’s appended video was 0:16, and Trump’s audible remarks were transcribed accurately and in full:

Americans’ financial situation — I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That's all.

MeidasTouch.com editor Aycn (@aycn) shared similar footage two minutes later, at 2:08 p.m. Eastern time:

Trump on Iran War: Reporter: What extent are Americans’ financial situation motivating you to make a deal? Trump: Not even a little bit. I don't think about Americans’ financial situation

As Rupar later pointed out (at 3:44 p.m.), the “financial situation” portion of Trump’s remarks had been excerpted into meme format by “the official Democratic Party [Twitter] account.”

Whether independently or from that iteration, the single sentence spread virally across social platforms.

Although Trump’s longer remarks — placing the comment in the context of the war in Iran — were elided, the remainder of his statement did not substantively alter their meaning.

Eventually, the brief comment was covered by national outlets like NBC News and ABC News.
